China Sanctions Ministers from Paraguay and Belize over Taiwan Ties

The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs sanctioned ministers from Paraguay and Belize for maintaining diplomatic relations with Taiwan, freezing assets and barring entry to China.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China sanctioned Paraguay's Communications Minister Gustavo Villate and Belize's Foreign Minister Francis Fonseca on October 12, 2026. Beijing froze the assets of both officials and barred them from entering mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau, citing the need to safeguard national sovereignty and oppose Taiwan independence separatist activities.

Chinese officials accused the ministers of acting as pawns who smeared China and spread disinformation regarding Chinese cyberattacks. These measures target officials from two of the 12 countries that maintain formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan. The diplomatic pressure coincides with increased Chinese military activity, including live-fire drills in the Bohai, Yellow, East China, and South China Seas.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan condemned the sanctions as preposterous and a blatant interference in the sovereignty of other nations, characterizing the move as transnational repression. The sanctions follow Taiwan's National Day celebrations, where President William Lai Ching-te asserted that the island would not give up its freedom.

Gustavo Villate described the sanctions as expected and stated that Paraguay would continue its projects and cooperation with Taiwan. The government of Belize did not immediately respond to the measures.
