Indiana Democrats Field Largest Legislative Candidate List This Century
The Indiana House Democratic Caucus fielded candidates for 97 of 100 House seats to challenge the Republican two-thirds supermajority in the November elections.
The Indiana House Democratic Caucus has fielded candidates for 97 of the 100 seats in the Indiana House of Representatives, marking the party's largest candidate list of the century. This total was finalized after Democrats filled seven additional vacancies following the Monday deadline to resolve openings from the May 5 primaries.
Democrats aim to secure at least four seats to break the Republican two-thirds supermajority. In contrast, Republicans are not challenging 20 Democratic legislators in the House, leaving 18 to 20 seats uncontested by the GOP. These vacancies are concentrated in Indianapolis, with 10 to 13 districts lacking Republican opponents, and five districts in Lake County.
In the state Senate, both parties left one vacancy among the 25 seats on the ballot. Republicans will not field a candidate in the Indianapolis district, while Democrats will not oppose Republican Jeff Ellington for a seat in southern Indiana.
