Violent Protests Erupt at Lovely Professional University Over Rape Allegations
Students at Lovely Professional University torched vehicles and facilities following reports of a campus rape, prompting a 10-day suspension of classes.
Violent student protests erupted at Lovely Professional University in Phagwara on Sunday after social media reports alleged the rape of a student on campus. The demonstrations escalated as students torched university facilities and police vehicles, forcing the deployment of a large police force to restore order.
In response to the unrest, the university suspended all classes for 10 days starting September 28 and postponed mid-term examinations. The Punjab Police have registered an FIR against unknown persons and are currently investigating the reports that triggered the violence.
The incident sparked political friction in the state. Raj Kumar Verka, working president of the Punjab Congress, criticized the Aam Aadmi Party government for its handling of the situation. Verka claimed that "gangsterism is at its peak today" and that the law and order situation in Punjab is in a "terrible state."
