Jordanian Figures Demand Withdrawal of U.S. Military Forces

More than 130 political, academic, cultural, trade union, and tribal figures in Jordan have issued an open letter demanding the immediate withdrawal of all foreign troops from the kingdom. The signatories are calling for the cancellation or restriction of a 2021 military agreement with the United States, arguing that the American presence exposes Jordan to significant security, political, and economic risks.

These demands emerged following Iranian missile and drone attacks directed at U.S. facilities within Jordan. The signatories specifically requested the neutralization of Jordanian military bases, ports, and airports to prevent their use in regional operations and to ensure the country is not dragged into a broader conflict. Sufyan al-Tell, a political activist and signatory, claimed that Jordan's capabilities were being exploited to defend Israel.

While some analysts suggest these calls are an attempt by Iran to sow internal discord and expand its influence, the signatories maintain that the country requires true neutrality and greater parliamentary oversight of defense deals. Despite this internal pressure, observers indicate that King Abdullah II is unlikely to change the kingdom's strategic policy toward Western allies.
