China Youth Unemployment Hits 19% Amid AI Job Cuts
The Government of China warns employers against using artificial intelligence to justify layoffs as youth unemployment reaches 19 percent amid a broader economic downturn.
The Government of China is facing a severe youth employment crisis as the urban jobless rate for 16- to 24-year-olds reached approximately 19 percent in August. This instability stems from a weakened economy, the bursting of the real-estate bubble, and previous government crackdowns on the private tutoring sector.
The crisis is intensified by the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence, which has reduced demand for entry- and mid-level workers. Tech giants including Alibaba Group, ByteDance, and Baidu have conducted staff cuts, with Baidu specifically laying off user-interface designers as AI development progresses.
Vice Premier He Lifeng expressed concern after polling major employers and learning that AI could potentially eliminate 30 percent or more of existing roles. In response, He Lifeng and other officials have warned employers against using AI as a justification for job cuts to maintain social stability.
Many disillusioned graduates have responded by adopting the lying flat philosophy or relocating to scenic areas like Dali to escape professional pressure and fierce competition.
