China Deploys Record Government Vessels Near Taiwan Waters

The Government of China deployed a record 244 coast guard, scientific research, and government ships in waters surrounding Taiwan during July 2026, according to the Taiwan Coast Guard. This represents a sharp escalation from 55 ships in June and 30 in May. When including vessels near offshore islands such as Kinmen, Matsu, and Pratas, the total number of sightings rose to 425. In the first 21 days of August, another 152 vessels were detected.

Taiwanese officials and analysts describe these movements as gray-zone tactics designed to assert jurisdiction and pressure Taipei without initiating open war. Approximately 60 percent of the vessels were coast guard ships. Notable activity included the first law enforcement patrol east of Taiwan in June and the first instance of maritime militia escorting a research vessel in Taiwanese waters. Research vessels, including the Tong Ji and Xiang Yang Hong 03, are believed to be collecting hydrographic data on deep-sea trenches to build anti-submarine warfare databases.

In response to the increasing pressure, the Legislature of Taiwan approved a plan on Thursday to spend over $7 billion on unmanned systems, including UAVs, USVs, and UUVs, over the next six years. This investment aims to deter Chinese attacks and expand the domestic drone industry. The Institute for the Study of War noted that these actions likely intend to expand de facto control and erode Taiwan's sovereignty.
