Waymo Deploys Driverless Cars for Employees in Detroit
Waymo has launched driverless car operations in Detroit, restricting initial rides to employees while preparing for a future public rollout.
Waymo began operating driverless cars on the streets of Detroit on Tuesday. The autonomous vehicles are currently active in downtown and several surrounding neighborhoods, including Corktown, Midtown, Hamtramck, and Indian Village.
Service is currently restricted to company employees. While Waymo has not set a specific date for a public launch, it has encouraged prospective customers to download its app. The company previously used cars with human drivers to map the city and intends to expand across the broader metropolitan area once it validates its technology and local operations.
Market data indicates that Waymo rides generally cost more than those from Uber or Lyft, although the price difference has narrowed to between 12% and 27%.
