U.S. Promotes Energy Dominance at G20 Meeting in Houston

United States energy officials used a G20 energy ministers meeting in Houston to promote American energy dominance as a remedy for global supply shocks. The meeting follows a surge in oil prices triggered by Iran closing the Strait of Hormuz and Houthi advances in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, events that followed U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran on February 28.

Doug Bergum, the U.S. Interior Secretary, emphasized the security and affordability of domestic energy. White House energy advisor Jarrod Agen stated the administration aims to make the Western Hemisphere the center of secure energy, spanning from Alaska to Argentina. To address electricity demands driven by the artificial intelligence industry, the Environmental Protection Agency reduced pollution limits for coal- and gas-fired power plants.

The administration is also moving to secure approximately one-fifth of Venezuela's oil reserves through a summer agreement following the capture of Nicolas Maduro. While U.S. officials highlight domestic security, analysts warn that Middle Eastern disruptions cannot be quickly mitigated and that Europe faces a potentially brutal winter due to supply constraints.
