Armenian Committee Approves US-Backed TRIPP Infrastructure Agreement

The Armenian National Assembly's Foreign Relations Committee approved a framework agreement with the United States to establish reciprocal transit links between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

The Standing Committee on Foreign Relations of the Armenian National Assembly approved a draft ratification of a framework agreement with the United States for the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP) on October 21, 2026. Ararat Mirzoyan, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, presented the project as a strategic partnership to transform Armenia into a regional logistics hub with increased connectivity toward Iran, China, and Central Asia.

Under the proposed arrangement, Azerbaijan would gain a transit route through Armenian territory to Nakhchivan and third countries, while Armenia would receive access to Azerbaijan's railway network to improve north-south connectivity. Mirzoyan clarified that the project lacks a single defined width because its components—including railways, electricity lines, and pipelines—may follow different routes. He noted that pipelines might be routed outside Syunik Province due to geographical constraints between local cliffs and the Araz River.

The committee passed the proposal with a 4-1 vote, though opposition lawmakers expressed concern that Armenia might provide transport connections to Azerbaijan without securing guaranteed peace agreements. Mirzoyan expressed hope that the project would facilitate border crossings with Georgia, Iran, and Azerbaijan, and potentially lead to the reopening of the border with Türkiye. The proposal now moves to a plenary session of the National Assembly for final consideration.
