India and Romania Agree to Double Bilateral Trade

President Droupadi Murmu of India conducted a state visit to Bucharest, Romania, on July 23, 2026, marking the first visit by an Indian President to the country in nearly three decades. During meetings at the Cotroceni Palace with Romanian President Nicusor Dan, the two leaders agreed to double bilateral trade over the next three years.

The nations signed three Memoranda of Understanding focusing on sports, science and technology, and the establishment of a Chair of Indian Studies at the University of Bucharest. Both leaders pledged to expand cooperation in defense, agriculture, artificial intelligence, pharmaceuticals, and renewable energy. As part of these efforts, India will double training opportunities for Romania under the ITEC program, specifically adding courses on cyber diplomacy and AI.

Romania expressed its intention to join the Global Biofuels Alliance and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure. To commemorate the 80th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, both countries designated 2028 as the India-Romania Year of Innovation.
