Cineplex Appoints Bill Walker CEO and Launches Strategic Review

The Toronto-based cinema operator Cineplex Inc. appointed Bill Walker as its new chief executive officer on September 23, 2026. Walker replaces the retiring Ellis Jacob, who will remain with the company as a special adviser through the end of the year to assist with a newly launched strategic review.

As part of this review, the company is exploring various options for the business, including a potential sale. Board chair Phyllis Yaffe stated that the board believes the current market valuation of the company does not fully reflect its business strength and long-term prospects.

This leadership transition and strategic shift follow years of corporate instability. In 2019, a failed $2.8 billion acquisition attempt by Cineworld PLC resulted in a protracted legal battle. Although Cineplex eventually won $1.24 billion in damages from Cineworld, the company has indicated it is unlikely to recover those funds.
