Eurozone Retail Sales Drop 0.3 Percent in June 2026
Eurozone retail sales fell 0.3 percent in June, reversing May's growth and signaling fragile household demand for European policymakers.
Retail sales in the Eurozone fell 0.3 percent month-on-month in June 2026, erasing a 0.4 percent increase recorded in May. A similar downward trend appeared across the broader European Union, where sales declined 0.1 percent after growing 0.6 percent the previous month.
The decline was broad-based. Sales of food, drinks, and tobacco in the Eurozone dropped 0.5 percent, while non-food sales fell 0.4 percent. These losses were partially offset by a 1.5 percent increase in automotive fuel sales. Despite the monthly dip, annual retail sales remained positive, growing 0.7 percent in the Eurozone and 1.2 percent across the EU.
National performance varied significantly. Finland, Romania, and Germany experienced the sharpest monthly declines, whereas Luxembourg, Portugal, Croatia, and Sweden reported the strongest gains.
The European Central Bank is monitoring these figures as an indicator of fragile household demand. This economic weakness may lead policymakers to remain patient and cautious regarding any further monetary tightening.
