Philippines Investigates Vanished Structure at Scarborough Shoal
The Philippines is investigating the brief appearance and disappearance of a suspected structure at the disputed Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea.
The Government of the Philippines is investigating the temporary appearance of a suspected structure at the entrance of the disputed Scarborough Shoal. Satellite imagery from Vantor and SeaLight identified a reflective object, potentially a floating raft or buoy, alongside a barrier between May 27 and May 30, 2026. By June 1, subsequent imagery confirmed the structure was no longer present.
Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. stated he received raw information regarding the object during the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore. The detection occurred following a five-day maritime exercise involving Philippine and United States forces and coincided with patrols by the Chinese military and coast guard.
While China's defense ministry declined to comment on the specific structure, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning asserted China's sovereignty over the atoll and its adjacent waters, claiming any activities conducted there are legitimate rights of a sovereign state.
