NPP Members Clash With Police Over Aboagye's Arrest

The New Patriotic Party clashed with police in Accra after the Economic and Organised Crime Office arrested Dennis Miracles Aboagye over alleged misappropriation of public funds.

Members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) clashed with Ghana Police officers on Monday, July 13, 2026, during a protest at the headquarters of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra. The demonstration followed the Sunday arrest of Dennis Miracles Aboagye, an NPP Communications Officer and aide to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, at the Accra International Airport.

EOCO officials arrested Aboagye in connection with an investigation into the suspected misappropriation and diversion of approximately GH¢55 million in public funds at the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralization (IMCCoD) between August 2022 and February 2025. While the government of President John Mahama denied claims of political targeting and asserted that investigations are lawful, NPP leadership alleged that Aboagye was detained without formal charges or access to legal counsel for over 48 hours.

NPP officials, including General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua and National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye, characterized the detention as a tool for political intimidation. Member of Parliament Kojo Oppong Nkrumah further claimed the arrests undermine the country's rule of law. The NPP demanded Aboagye's immediate release or that he be formally charged in court as required by the Constitution.
