World Bank Ranks India Among Top 10 AI-Ready Markets

The World Bank identified India as a leading emerging-market performer in AI readiness, citing a surge in private investment and a strong technical workforce.

The World Bank Group has named India one of the top 10 leading emerging-market performers in artificial intelligence readiness. In its report, India and Artificial Intelligence: Seizing the Development Opportunity, the organization highlighted the country's globally integrated IT sector, digital public infrastructure, and large technical workforce as primary drivers of this position.

Private investment in Indian AI more than tripled between 2024 and 2025, rising from $1.2 billion to $4.1 billion. Additionally, the number of professionals working in Global Capability Centres grew to 2.36 million. World Bank economists suggest that the most immediate gains will result from adapting existing AI models to local conditions in agriculture and medicine, rather than attempting to build new frontier models.

To maintain this momentum, the World Bank recommends that the government deepen AI-enabling infrastructure, improve the business environment, and strengthen basic communication and quantitative skills within the workforce. The organization warned that failing to leverage AI potential represents a long-term risk to India's growth story.
