HMRC Deploys Digital Ambassadors to Combat AI Tax Misinformation

HM Revenue & Customs is launching a strategy using digital ambassadors and verification tools to counter AI-generated tax misinformation spreading across social media.

The HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) is launching a comprehensive strategy to combat tax misinformation propagated by artificial intelligence and social media. The UK tax authority plans to deploy digital ambassadors to online forums, including Reddit, to flag official guidance and rebuild trust in government data.

This initiative follows discoveries that AI-generated summaries provided incorrect value-added tax deadlines. HMRC traced these errors to a chain of misinformation that originated on a single website before spreading through social media. To prevent future inaccuracies, the agency implemented an HMRC Verified strategy designed to steer large language models toward official data and is developing an AI-assisted tool to monitor online claims.

The agency aims to reduce the UK's £59 billion tax gap, noting that small businesses often lack the expertise to distinguish between accurate guidance and incorrect financial advice provided by chatbots or social media influencers.
