Moderate Democrats Draft Amendment Denouncing Socialism

Four moderate members of the House Democratic Caucus drafted an amendment to a Republican resolution that condemns socialism and the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). Josh Gottheimer, along with Representatives Hillary Scholten, Tom Suozzi, and Jared Moskowitz, introduced the measure as the House prepares to vote on a Republican resolution that denounces socialism while promoting the SAVE America Act, a voter ID bill.

Gottheimer criticized the Republican strategy as a political game, arguing that the inclusion of the SAVE America Act serves as a poison pill intended to ensure no Democrat would vote for the resolution. The Democratic amendment explicitly links socialist ideology to totalitarian regimes, specifically citing the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, the Great Leap Forward in China, and the Holodomor in the Soviet Union.

Additionally, the amendment denounces the DSA for its advocacy to defund the U.S. Armed Forces and police, abolish the U.S. Senate, and remove sanctions on North Korea, Cuba, and Iran.
