Auto Alliance Urges Congress to Ban Chinese Vehicles

The Alliance for Automotive Innovation, representing major carmakers such as General Motors, Toyota, and Volkswagen, has urged the U.S. Congress to enact a permanent ban on Chinese vehicles, software, and hardware before the legislative session ends in January. In a letter to House and Senate leadership, the group warned that Chinese automakers are "dumping subsidized vehicles" globally, posing threats to domestic economic interests and national security.

While the United States Department of Commerce currently maintains restrictions on connected vehicle systems from adversaries and steep tariffs limit market entry, the coalition seeks to enshrine these protections into law. The group specifically aims to prevent inroads from companies such as BYD Co. and Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd.

This request follows similar pleas from automotive groups in March, as affordable Chinese electric vehicles have gained traction in Mexico and Canada. The alliance argues that the scale and urgency of the threat necessitate a legislative ban on connected hardware and software to prevent similar market penetration within the United States.
