Amit Shah to Visit Manipur for Medical College Launch

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will visit Manipur in the first week of October to lay the foundation stone for the Senapati Medical College in the Naga-predominant Senapati district. The visit, announced following a meeting with Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh in New Delhi on August 26, will also include a review of various regional developmental projects.

During their discussions, Shah pledged the central government's full support to fulfill the aspirations of the people of Manipur and reviewed the state's law and order situation. He specifically commended the state government for the August 21 resumption of inter-state passenger bus services between Manipur, Assam, and Nagaland along National Highway-2. These services had been disrupted for over three years following the outbreak of ethnic violence between Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities in May 2023.

The planned visit occurs amid a volatile security environment. Ethnic conflict between Meiteis and Kukis has killed at least 260 people since May 2023, and intermittent violence continues between Naga and Kuki communities. Additionally, Meitei and Naga organizations are intensifying demands for the implementation of the National Register of Citizens before the census and delimitation exercises. In a related effort to secure central aid, Chief Minister Singh also met with Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju to request assistance for the welfare of minority communities in the state.
