Nepal Rejects Individual Climate Compensation Claims Against China

Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal met with Chinese Ambassador Zhang Maoming in Kathmandu on September 3 to express gratitude for China's disaster relief assistance following severe mudslides. During the meeting, Khanal clarified that Nepal has no intention of seeking "climate justice compensation" from any specific country, including China.

Khanal stated that Nepal will instead pursue compensation from the international community under the framework of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement. Both officials acknowledged that climate change represents a shared global responsibility and a common challenge affecting the Himalayan ecosystem.

Ambassador Zhang affirmed China's readiness to continue cooperating with Nepal and the international community to mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change, noting that the issue is a common challenge facing humanity.
