U.S. Approves $4.5 Billion Aircraft Sale to Qatar

The U.S. Department of State approved a potential $4.5 billion sale of four KC-46A aerial refueling aircraft to Qatar to bolster regional security.

The United States Department of State approved a potential $4.5 billion Foreign Military Sale to Qatar for up to four Boeing KC-46A Pegasus aerial refueling aircraft and associated equipment. The package includes PW4062 turbofan engines, radar-warning receivers, laser-warning equipment, and logistical support. U.S. officials stated the acquisition would provide the Qatar Emiri Air Force with an independent capability to extend the operational range of its fighter fleet, which includes F-15QA, Rafale, and Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft.

The U.S. government asserted that the sale would strengthen Qatar's strategic role in ensuring regional security and improve interoperability with allied forces without altering the basic military balance in the region. The deal has been sent to Congress for approval, with Boeing, Pratt & Whitney Military Engines, RTX Corporation, and Northrop Grumman Corporation listed as principal contractors.

This approval comes during a period of regional instability following a war between the U.S., Israel, and Iran that began in February 2026. While a pact to end the war was reached, retaliatory strikes continue. President Donald Trump has warned Iran of "very draconian sanctions" and claimed a U.S. naval blockade has restricted ships from reaching the country, though he noted the Strait of Hormuz remains open.
