Clearlake Capital Negotiates Purchase of Boehly and Walter Stakes
Clearlake Capital is in discussions to buy out Chelsea co-owners Todd Boehly and Mark Walter in a deal that could value the club over £5 billion.
Majority owner Clearlake Capital is in negotiations to purchase the stakes held by co-owners Todd Boehly and Mark Walter in Chelsea FC. The potential transaction could value the Premier League club at more than £5 billion, representing a significant increase from the £2.3 billion paid during the 2022 acquisition from Roman Abramovich.
The discussions follow a breakdown in strategic alignment between Boehly and Clearlake co-founder Behdad Eghbali. Disagreements center on the club's direction, specifically regarding transfer strategies and the implementation of a multi-club model via BlueCo. While Boehly has prioritized global branding and sporting success, Clearlake has pursued a different operational approach.
Further friction exists regarding stadium development. Boehly and Walter favor a major expansion to increase non-matchday revenue, a plan that differs from the vision held by Clearlake. Although negotiations have gained momentum, no formal agreement has been reached, and Clearlake is not actively seeking to sell its own controlling stake. Chelsea and the involved parties have declined to comment on the reports.
