Microsoft Cuts Neocloud Partners to Prioritize Own Data Centers

Microsoft is reducing its reliance on specialized AI infrastructure providers to prioritize its own data center footprint and a smaller group of key suppliers.

Microsoft Corporation is shrinking its roster of neocloud partners—specialized AI infrastructure providers—to prioritize its own data center footprint and a smaller group of key suppliers. The company has reportedly opted not to renew a deal with Oracle and has reduced its engagement with NScale Global Holdings Limited, ending a contract in Texas and abandoning a site in England due to electricity access issues.

Microsoft is currently evaluating whether to terminate agreements with other partners, including CoreWeave, Nebius, Chronoscale, IREN, and Lambda. While the company maintains its strategy is based on flexibility and choice, the shift comes as the neocloud sector faces financial strain from heavy debt and rising borrowing costs. Market confidence has reacted sharply, with Oracle shares declining and several neocloud stocks dropping significantly over the past month.

Operational delays have also emerged. IREN reported that some capacity handovers to Microsoft have been pushed to early 2027 to accommodate networking equipment upgrades. This trend aligns with observations that capital markets are now more focused on whether these massive infrastructure contracts can be delivered and run at a profit rather than simply the size of the deal.
