Bundestag Approves Temporary Fuel Tax Cut to Lower Gas Prices

The Bundestag, Germany's lower house of parliament, approved a temporary fuel tax cut on Friday to address surging gas and diesel prices linked to the Iran war. The measure, which takes effect October 1 and runs through the end of the year, reduces taxes by approximately €0.17 per liter.

The Federal Government of Germany expects the rebate to result in €2.5 billion in lost tax revenue for federal and state authorities. The decision follows reports from the ADAC motoring association that average prices for diesel and super E10 reached record highs last week.

Despite the legislative approval, the government noted that gas stations are not legally obligated to pass the full tax savings on to consumers, leaving the actual impact on pump prices uncertain.
