Micron Shares Volatile After Surpassing $1,000 AI Rally

Micron Technology shares fell 7% to $940.89 following a surge past $1,000 driven by AI memory chip demand and strong quarterly revenue growth.

Shares of Micron Technology experienced significant volatility in mid-August 2026, first surging past the $1,000 threshold before retreating approximately 7% to $940.89. The initial rally was driven by intense demand for artificial intelligence memory chips and bullish analyst upgrades from UBS and New Street Research, who set price targets of $1,625 and $1,250 respectively. This growth was supported by the company's HBM3E memory, which reduces power consumption by 30% compared to competitors.

The subsequent decline occurred as investors reduced exposure to high-valuation AI stocks amid rising Treasury yields, triggering a broad risk-off movement across the Nasdaq and semiconductor sector. Analysts attributed the pullback to valuation concerns, noting the stock had increased more than 700% over the previous year, rather than a deterioration in business fundamentals.

Despite the price fluctuation, Micron reported strong financial performance. Fiscal third-quarter revenue surged to $41.46 billion, up from $23.86 billion in the previous quarter and $9.3 billion a year earlier. The company reported GAAP net income of $28.24 billion and operating cash flow of $25.39 billion. Strategically, Micron has increased its planned U.S. investment to over $250 billion through 2035 to localize 40% of its DRAM output and launched the $250 million Micron Ventures Paradigm Fund.
