Siddaramaiah Announces Retirement From Future Electoral Contests

Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced on July 26, 2026, that he will not contest the 2028 Karnataka Assembly elections or any future electoral contests. Speaking at a gathering in K R Pet, Mandya district, the 79-year-old Congress leader cited his advancing age, declining health, and the pervasive corruption in modern politics as the primary drivers for his decision.

Siddaramaiah lamented the current state of electoral dynamics, stating that money has become central to contesting elections and that candidates are now expected to pay voters rather than receive voluntary support. He asserted that such a climate leaves little room for honest politics. Despite withdrawing from the ballot, he pledged to remain active in public life and continue serving as a voice for the people.

This announcement follows his resignation as Chief Minister on May 28, 2026. That transition occurred under instructions from the Indian National Congress high command to facilitate a leadership handover to D K Shivakumar. Following the announcement, Congress MP Prabha Mallikarjun stated that Siddaramaiah would remain a great strength to the party and continue to provide guidance.
