Democratic Incumbents Win Massachusetts Primaries Amid Israel Policy Disputes

Democratic incumbents Jake Auchincloss and Katherine Clark secured victories in their respective Massachusetts primary elections on Tuesday, overcoming challenges from progressive candidates focused on foreign policy and economic reform.

Auchincloss won the primary for the 4th Congressional District, defeating AI policy researcher Jason Poulos. While Auchincloss campaigned on housing costs and AI economic impacts, Poulos ran on a platform of Medicare-for-all and the cessation of U.S. military aid to Israel. The race highlighted internal party tensions; despite an endorsement from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, Auchincloss voted in July to eliminate $3.3 billion in military financing for Israel and noted that some 2025 Israeli actions crossed lines regarding humanitarian conditions.

In the 5th Congressional District, House Democratic Whip Katherine Clark defeated progressive challengers Jonathan Paz and Tarik Samman. Clark's campaign raised $4.5 million, significantly outspending her opponents. Like Auchincloss, Clark faced criticism for accepting funds from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, though she has criticized the government of Benjamin Netanyahu and also voted in July to cut $3.3 billion in U.S. military aid.
