Abhishek Banerjee Alleges BJP Attack on Kolkata Residence

Abhishek Banerjee and Mamata Banerjee accused BJP workers of attacking Banerjee's home and disrupting Kali Puja celebrations in Kolkata, leading to clashes and multiple injuries.

All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee alleged that BJP workers attacked his Kalighat residence in Kolkata around 2:00 AM on November 7, 2026. Banerjee characterized the incident as a "conspiracy to kill" him and the seventh attempt on his life in six months, claiming the assault followed two days of reconnaissance. He accused the Kolkata Police, the Calcutta High Court, and the Supreme Court of remaining "mute spectators" during the violence.

Clashes erupted between AITC workers celebrating Banerjee's 39th birthday and BJP supporters, leaving at least eight people injured, three seriously. AITC leaders, including Mamata Banerjee and Kirti Azad, condemned the violence as "hooliganism" and alleged that attackers used stones and sticks to demolish local shops and disrupt Kali Puja celebrations. Mamata Banerjee threatened to move the Supreme Court and wrote to the Lok Sabha Speaker regarding a breakdown of law and order.

The Bharatiya Janata Party rejected the allegations. Minister Dilip Ghosh and leader Sukanta Majumdar described the event as a "drama" and a backlash against the AITC for blocking public roads with birthday celebrations. Ritabrata Bandopadhyay added that local residents were angry over road obstructions hindering the transport of religious idols. While the Kolkata Police detained several individuals and sealed the area, Rashtriya Janata Dal MP Sudhakar Singh demanded the imposition of President's Rule in West Bengal, citing increased lawlessness.
