India and Bangladesh Clash Over Border Push-ins and Repatriations

India and Bangladesh face escalating tensions as an opposition coalition organizes protests over alleged border killings and forced repatriations of nationals.

Tensions between India and Bangladesh have escalated following allegations of forced repatriations and border killings. The Government of India denies engaging in push-ins, asserting that it repatriates illegal foreign nationals through established legal and bilateral mechanisms. Conversely, a coalition of 11 opposition and Islamist parties in Bangladesh, led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, alleges that India's Border Security Force killed 19 Bangladeshis and injured 24 others during the first 100 days of the current government.

Recent incidents illustrate the friction, such as a standoff in the Nandir Char sector of Meghalaya where Sati Rajbanshi, a Bangladeshi man, became stranded in no-man's land. The Border Security Force claims Bangladeshi authorities attempted to force Rajbanshi into Indian territory, while the Border Guard Bangladesh reportedly refused to accept other individuals at the border in West Bengal.

In response, the 11-party alliance announced protest rallies in border districts on June 12 and a major procession in Dhaka on June 15. Concurrently, the National Citizen Party has called for border residents to form a human shield to prevent the entry of criminals and terrorists. These developments follow the 57th Director General-level talks between the two nations' border forces held in New Delhi from June 8 to 11.
