Siegfried Muresan Challenges PSD to Support Pro-European Government

Prime Minister-designate Siegfried Muresan has proposed a pro-European governing programme focused on modernising Romania and ensuring economic growth outpaces public debt. Presenting the plan to Parliament and President Nicusor Dan, Muresan outlined goals to increase the efficiency of state-owned energy and transport companies, maintain a flat tax rate, and eventually return the VAT rate to 19%.

Muresan characterized the upcoming parliamentary vote as a "test of truth" for the Social Democratic Party (PSD). He argued that the PSD bears primary responsibility for six months of political instability after partnering with the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) to bring down the previous Bolojan Government. Muresan challenged the party to decide whether to support a "responsible pro-European Government" or remain aligned with populist and extremist parties.

While Muresan's coalition—which includes the National Liberal Party, Save Romania Union, and the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania—currently holds 170 votes, it lacks an absolute majority. Muresan stated he will conduct official dialogues with PSD President Sorin Grindeanu and party leadership to secure the necessary support rather than seeking individual votes from party members.
