Gold Fields Secures Environmental Approval for Windfall Gold Project

Gold Fields received a certificate of authorization from Quebec's government to begin construction and development of the 300,000-ounce annual Windfall gold project in Canada.

The Ministry of the Environment of Quebec issued a certificate of authorization on October 30 to Gold Fields, permitting the construction and full development of the Windfall gold project. The approval confirms the project completed a social and environmental impact assessment under the Environment Quality Act, allowing the company to proceed subject to regulatory conditions.

The project is expected to produce approximately 300,000 ounces of gold annually and will be powered primarily by hydroelectricity provided by the Cree First Nation of Waswanipi. This authorization follows the June 2026 signing of the Uukiimau Agreement with the Cree Nation Government, the Grand Council of the Crees, and the Cree First Nation of Waswanipi to ensure Indigenous participation and economic benefits.

Gold Fields plans to remobilize personnel, restart underground activities, and begin early civil works and camp construction. While the company estimates the project cost at $1.9 billion, BMO Capital Markets suggests expenditures could reach $2.1 billion. Full development remains dependent on securing a mining lease and secondary permits.

The company targets a final investment decision, an updated construction schedule, and capital estimates by February 2027, coinciding with its provisional 2026 financial results.
