S&P 500 and Nasdaq Return to Record Highs
The S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100 hit record levels as AI and semiconductor stocks rebounded following a massive short cover.
The S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100 have returned to record levels following a sharp rebound in semiconductor and artificial intelligence stocks. The PHLX Semiconductor Index rose approximately 15% since July 29, with prior laggards outperforming steadier stocks during the recovery.
Market gains are concentrated among a few technology giants. Microsoft, Nvidia, Alphabet, and Amazon collectively added roughly $2.5 trillion in value since July 29, while Apple Inc. declined 8%, erasing about $400 billion in market value.
Citadel LLC contributed to the rally by acquiring the public stock portfolio of Leopold Aschenbrenner's Situational Awareness fund on July 30. This transaction removed a significant market overhang, which analysts described as a massive short cover. Scott Rubner of Citadel characterized the July market movement as a technical reset of the structural bull market, though observers note that long-term sustainability depends on whether buying continues after the initial squeeze fades.
