OpenAI Raises Computing Infrastructure Spending Projection to $750 Billion

OpenAI increased its projected spending on computing infrastructure to approximately $750 billion through 2030, up from a previous estimate of $600 billion. As part of this expansion, the company announced a $20 billion investment to build Project Camellia, its first self-designed and built data center, located at the Savannah Gateway Industrial Hub in Effingham County, Georgia.

The new facility will utilize 3.2 gigawatts of power from Georgia Power between 2028 and 2032. This move follows existing large-scale infrastructure agreements with Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, and Oracle. To oversee the construction and delivery of the Georgia facility, the company hired Brent Mayo as head of data-center build and delivery.

The spending surge has created internal tension within the company. Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar expressed concerns regarding the company's ability to honor future contracts if revenue growth fails to keep pace with these massive financial commitments.
