Airbnb Pilots Lower Host Fees to Combat Direct Bookings
Airbnb launched a U.S. pilot program reducing host service fees to 6% or 10% for bookings made via direct links.
Airbnb Inc. launched a limited pilot program in the United States to reduce service fees for hosts to either 6% or 10%, a significant decrease from the company average of 16%. The initiative targets hosts who utilize third-party software to manage their listings.
To qualify for the lower rates, guests must book through a unique link shared by the host. This system also enables hosts to provide custom discounts to guests. The company is using the test to analyze how various pricing structures affect hosting businesses and to ensure more reservations remain within its ecosystem.
The program serves as a strategic response to the book direct trend, in which hosts steer customers toward independent websites to retain more revenue. While Chief Executive Officer Brian Chesky previously downplayed the influence of this movement, the pilot represents a concrete effort to discourage hosts from bypassing the platform.
