AWS Executive Relocates to Tokyo to Combat Japan's Digital Cliff

Amazon Web Services is relocating its top Asia-Pacific executive to Tokyo to accelerate cloud and AI adoption amid government warnings of massive economic losses.

Jaime Vallés, the managing director of Asia-Pacific, Japan and China for Amazon Web Services, is relocating to Tokyo to drive the adoption of cloud computing and artificial intelligence. The move follows warnings from the Japanese government that the country faces a digital cliff, where a failure to modernize legacy IT systems could cost the economy $76 billion annually.

AWS intends to help Japanese firms transition from traditional mainframe-based platforms to the cloud to remain competitive with regional peers such as China, South Korea, and Taiwan. Vallés noted that Japan is currently in a moment of change, as AI, security, and competition provide strong incentives for companies to abandon legacy on-premise technology.

To support this transition, the Japanese government has planned $2.3 trillion in public and private investment across 17 strategic sectors by 2040, with the largest portion dedicated to semiconductors. Digital Minister Hisashi Matsumoto emphasized the urgency of these efforts, stating that Japan cannot afford to fall behind in AI development or risk becoming an AI colony.
