Russia Intensifies Strikes on Ukrainian Ports and Merchant Ships

The Government of the Russian Federation has intensified military strikes against Ukrainian ports and critical infrastructure in the Black Sea region, specifically targeting Odesa, Chornomorsk, Pivdennyi, and Izmail. The offensive includes cruise missile attacks on merchant vessels, most notably the Guinea-Bissau-flagged cargo ship Golden Leo off the coast of Odesa, which killed nine crew members and one Ukrainian pilot. The Russian Ministry of Defense claims these strikes target logistics hubs and military cargoes, while Ukrainian officials describe them as attacks on civilian infrastructure.

These operations have severely disrupted Ukraine's maritime export capacity, causing a one-third drop in Odesa's storage capacity and forcing major trading companies to suspend operations. This blockade has pushed global wheat futures to near two-year highs in Chicago and 17-month highs in Paris. Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yuriy Ihnat stated the concentration of attacks on Odesa is due to the region's economic significance and proximity to NATO borders.

In response, Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi announced that the government is preparing measures to enhance navigation safety for civilian vessels. Ukraine has also scaled up its own offensive; drone forces commander Robert Brovdi reported striking 183 Russian vessels in July. Other recent clashes include Ukrainian drone strikes on logistics facilities in Moscow and a bus in the Belgorod region, while Russian strikes in the Odesa region killed 28 people in July.
