IPOB Demands UK Intervention in Nnamdi Kanu Case
The Indigenous People of Biafra demanded the British Government use diplomatic leverage to ensure the human rights of detained leader Nnamdi Kanu.
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) demanded an immediate explanation from the British Government on Monday regarding its failure to intervene in the detention and prosecution of group leader Nnamdi Kanu. The group argues that the United Kingdom is ignoring its own policy of assisting citizens detained abroad when international standards of legality and due process are not met.
IPOB specifically questioned the legality of Kanu's 2021 rendition from Kenya to Nigeria and his November 2025 conviction on terrorism charges, which the group claims relied on repealed legislation. The organization also highlighted the subsequent delay in hearing Kanu's pending appeal.
While stating it is not asking Britain to dictate the court's outcome, IPOB urged the British Government to use diplomatic leverage to compel Nigerian authorities to list and hear Kanu's appeal and associated suits. The group seeks to ensure the protection of Kanu's fundamental human rights as a British citizen and the adherence to judicial timelines.
