Senfronia Thompson Secures Votes for Texas House Speaker

State Representative Senfronia Thompson has secured the majority of votes to become the first woman and first Black speaker of the Texas House.

State Representative Senfronia Thompson announced Friday that she has secured the votes necessary to become the next speaker of the Texas House. A Houston Democrat and the longest-serving woman and Black legislator in state history, Thompson is poised to lead the chamber after Democrats won their first House majority since 2003 and swept all statewide seats.

Thompson's path to the speakership was cleared after her only competitor, State Representative Eddie Morales Jr., dropped his bid and endorsed her. To win the gavel during the formal vote on January 12, a candidate needs 76 votes. Thompson has pledged to restore bipartisanship by appointing members of both parties to committee chairmanships, moving away from the partisan leadership of outgoing Republican Speaker Dustin Burrows.

If elected, Thompson will join Governor-elect Gina Hinojosa and Lieutenant Governor-elect Vikki Goodwin to form the first all-female "Big Three" of top state officials in Texas history. While some Republicans have discussed power-sharing coalitions, others have vowed to remain a united opposition party.
