Michigan and Tennessee Report High Turnout in August Primaries

Early in-person voting for Michigan's August 4 primary election began statewide on July 25 and runs through August 2. Under 2022 reforms, voters can cast ballots at designated sites using tabulators, with some communities like Lansing and Grand Blanc Township extending availability to August 3. More than 572,000 absentee ballots were cast prior to the start of the in-person period. The primary includes races for governor, U.S. Senate, and all 13 U.S. House seats.

In Tennessee, early voting for the August 6 state and federal primaries has seen a 45% increase in participation compared to 2022. As of July 23, 252,750 ballots were cast, with Republican voters outnumbering Democrats. High turnout is attributed to an open gubernatorial primary featuring candidates such as U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn and several contested U.S. House seats. Sullivan County led the state in turnout increases, and Washington County officials indicated they expect to meet or surpass a goal of 20,000 voters.

State officials in both regions emphasize the convenience of these options. Michigan's Deputy Secretary of State Aghogho Edevbie stated that accessible options are intended to build upon previous record turnouts, while Tennessee officials in Hamilton County described the early engagement as outstanding.
