General Motors Returns to V-8 and Smartphone Integration

General Motors is launching a major redesign of its 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks, featuring a renewed focus on internal combustion engines. The updated lineup includes two new, more powerful V-8 engines with lower emissions, an enhanced turbocharged four-cylinder option, and an improved 3.0-liter diesel engine. The diesel variant, paired with an optional larger fuel tank, is designed to achieve a highway driving range exceeding 900 miles.

President Mark Reuss defended the prioritization of diesel efficiency over hybrid systems, a strategy that diverges from competitors who are focusing on hybrid powertrains. This shift toward traditional engines comes amid lackluster electric vehicle demand and deregulation by the Trump administration, which reduced federal EV incentives. However, the company is currently cooperating with a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation into failures regarding its current 6.2-liter V-8 engines.

In a reversal of a 2023 policy, the automaker is also bringing back Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for the 2027 trucks. The new infotainment system uses a split-screen interface that integrates phone projection within contextual cards alongside native vehicle data, such as Super Cruise readouts. Executives stated the decision was driven by customer feedback, as many truck buyers viewed the absence of smartphone mirroring as a deal-breaker. GM plans to expand this integrated interface across its entire portfolio of gas, diesel, and electric vehicles.
