Shootings in Isfahan and Mashhad: Mathematician Killed in January Massacres, Two Dead in Recent Attack
Iranian authorities and family members report fatal shootings in Isfahan and Mashhad, including the death of a mathematician during January massacres.
Reports have emerged regarding separate fatal incidents in Iran, including a death tied to a period of mass killings in January 2026 and a recent shooting in Mashhad.
In Isfahan, Dr. Mohammad Hassan Ashrafi, a 36-year-old mathematician and university lecturer, was shot from behind in the Al-e Mohammad district on January 9, 2026. The killing occurred during a birthday celebration for his son amidst wider massacres that opposition-linked estimates suggest claimed between 35,000 and 40,000 lives on January 8 and 9. Ashrafi's brother stated that the government harassed the family for a week before returning the body and prohibited the use of the tulip symbol or the term "Javidnam" (Immortal Hero) on the gravestone.
Separately, a shooting on Thursday night, July 9, 2026, in the Sarafrazan neighborhood of Mashhad left two people dead. The incident took place around 22:00 local time, approximately 17 kilometers from the shrine of Imam Reza. Amirollah Shamaqdari, the deputy governor of Khorasan Razavi province for security affairs, stated that the identities of the victims and the cause of the shooting remain unknown.
