Anthropic Leases SpaceX Colossus 1 Supercomputer to Scale Claude AI

Anthropic signed a compute partnership with SpaceX to access the Colossus 1 data center, expanding capacity for Claude AI following a massive surge in user demand.

The AI startup Anthropic signed a strategic partnership with SpaceX on May 6, 2026, to lease the full computing capacity of the Colossus 1 data center in Memphis, Tennessee. The deal provides Anthropic with over 220,000 NVIDIA GPUs and 300 megawatts of power, allowing the company to resolve an infrastructure emergency caused by an 80-fold increase in revenue and usage, which reached $30 billion on an annualized basis.

As a result of the expanded capacity, Anthropic doubled five-hour rate limits for Claude Code across Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans and removed peak-hour restrictions. This move aims to counter competition from OpenAI's Codex and support corporate clients like Uber and Netflix. The agreement follows similar large-scale compute deals with Amazon, Google, Broadcom, and Microsoft.

The partnership coincides with Elon Musk's dissolution of xAI as a standalone entity, rebranding its products as SpaceXAI. Musk, who previously called Anthropic "misanthropic," reversed his stance after meeting senior staff, stating that the company's AI is "good for humanity." He noted that he reserves the right to reclaim the compute if the AI harms humanity. Analysts estimate the lease will generate between $3 billion and $4 billion in annual revenue for SpaceX as the company prepares for an initial public offering.

Beyond terrestrial infrastructure, Anthropic and SpaceX are collaborating to develop high-performance computing for autonomous spacecraft navigation and satellite operations. Both companies expressed interest in developing multiple gigawatts of orbital AI compute capacity in space to sidestep Earth-based constraints.
