Mamdani and Hochul Launch $800 Million NYC Bus Plan

Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul unveiled a plan to increase New York City bus speeds by 20% through infrastructure and fleet upgrades.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul announced the Next Stop: Fast Buses, Better Service plan on July 8, 2026, to increase New York City bus speeds by up to 20%. The 800 million dollar initiative targets 50 priority corridors, including five rapid corridors such as Flatbush Avenue and Northern Boulevard, aiming to reduce trip times by up to six minutes per ride.

The plan involves replacing 40% of the fleet with 2,500 new vehicles and implementing all-door boarding by 2027. To clear obstructed lanes, the city will expand NYPD patrols and add 200 automated enforcement cameras across 50 routes. This includes a 998 million dollar contract with Verra Mobility Systems. Further improvements include installing 300 new shelters by 2028 and real-time passenger displays by 2030.

Financial contributions include 254 million dollars from the city and 628 million dollars in capital funds over five years. While the plan focuses on infrastructure over free fares, Mamdani reached a separate budget deal with the City Council to expand the Fair Fares program for low-income residents. MTA officials noted that the current collaboration marks a shift from the administration of former Mayor Eric Adams, which was described as an uncertain partner. Some critics, including Passengers United, argued the time savings are insignificant and suggested camera enforcement is intended for revenue generation.
