Firmus Technologies Targets $7 Billion ASX IPO Amid Backlash

Firmus Technologies plans a $7 billion IPO on the Australian Securities Exchange while facing community protests and analyst skepticism over its valuation.

Firmus Technologies is preparing for an initial public offering on the Australian Securities Exchange later this month, aiming to raise $7 billion. The float would mark the second-largest in Australian history, with the company targeting a valuation exceeding $40 billion. This surge from a $2 billion valuation a year ago is driven by the global AI boom and a strategic partnership with Nvidia.

Despite the financial momentum, the company faces significant community backlash in Tasmania. Local opposition has centered on the fast-tracked approval of a $2.1 billion datacentre in Launceston and other proposed sites. The company has responded by stating that sporting partnerships are not a substitute for genuine community engagement.

Investment analysts have questioned the feasibility of the company's $5 billion annual earnings forecast, with some describing the figures as a fairytale. Additionally, concerns have emerged regarding the role of retail investors. Because early institutional backers such as Blackstone and Jane Street lack escrow arrangements, they can sell shares immediately after listing, leading to warnings that retail buyers may simply be providing a liquidity exit strategy for these early investors.
