UK Government Launches Business Rate Review for Hospitality Sector

The UK government announced an independent review to reform business rate valuations for pubs and hotels across England and Wales. Led by specialist Jerry Schurder, the review will examine current valuation methodologies to ensure they better reflect trading realities. Schurder is scheduled to report findings to the Treasury by the end of March 2027, with the results intended to shape the 2029 revaluation process.

The initiative responds to severe financial pressures facing the hospitality sector, including the expiration of pandemic-era relief, rising food and energy costs, and increased tax burdens. While current valuation increases remain in place, the government indicated that further reforms, such as small business rates relief, may be introduced during Chancellor John Healey's budget on October 28.

Trade bodies UKHospitality and the British Beer & Pub Association welcomed the move. UKHospitality chief executive Allen Simpson stated the system needs to better reflect trading realities, while British Beer & Pub Association chief executive Emma McClarkin described the review as "sorely needed and hugely welcome."
