Nvidia RTX 5080 Prices Surge Past $2,000 Amid AI Shortage

Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 retail prices have doubled since launch as AI infrastructure demand diverts components away from consumer gaming graphics cards.

Retail prices for the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 have surged past $2,000 at major U.S. retailers, more than doubling its January 2025 launch MSRP of $999. Current market prices in the United States range from $1,800 to over $2,300, with some third-party listings exceeding $3,000. In the United Kingdom, prices have risen nearly 50% over the past year, with some models increasing by approximately £200 in recent weeks.

This price hike follows the near-total disappearance of the flagship RTX 5090 from retail shelves. In the U.S., some RTX 5090 listings have reached $12,000, while UK prices have hit £7,000. Availability is severely limited at major retailers including Best Buy, Newegg, and Micro Center, leaving much of the remaining stock to third-party sellers.

Supply shortages are attributed to the AI boom, as Nvidia and memory manufacturers shift production toward high-margin enterprise hardware and HBM for data centers. This shift has reduced the allocation of components for consumer gaming GPUs and increased GDDR7 memory costs. While Nvidia maintains that the RTX 5090 is not retired, board partners report an inability to place new orders. Speculation suggests the company is diverting top-tier chips to data center customers to maximize profits, though Nvidia has not officially confirmed this strategy.
