India Deploys Over 52,000 Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

The Government of India has established 52,718 public electric vehicle charging stations, including 16,561 fast chargers for cars. Minister of State for Heavy Industries Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma announced the figures in Parliament on July 21, 2026, stating that the infrastructure expansion aims to reduce range anxiety for drivers.

To support this growth, the government is utilizing two primary funding streams: Rs 912.50 crore under the FAME-II scheme and Rs 2,000 crore under the PM E-DRIVE scheme for stations in cities and along highways. The broader PM E-DRIVE scheme carries a total outlay of Rs 10,900 crore to support various electric vehicles and infrastructure. Additionally, electric cars receive financial incentives ranging from 13% to 18% under the Production Linked Incentive Scheme for Automobile and Auto Components.

Regulatory shifts are also driving the expansion. The Ministry of Power issued the 2024 installation guidelines, and the government removed licensing requirements for establishing charging stations to encourage private entrepreneurship.
