Pakistan and Afghan Taliban Trade Accusations Over Border Clashes

The Afghan Taliban and the Government of Pakistan are engaged in a diplomatic and military escalation following clashes in Afghanistan's Nuristan province. The Afghan Ministry of Defense reported that its forces killed 28 fighters and captured 32 others, including Islamic State members, in the Kamdesh district on September 26. Kabul alleged that Pakistani intelligence agencies recruited former Afghan security personnel, promising them asylum and salaries before training them to create insecurity in Afghanistan.

Pakistan's Ministry of Information and Broadcasting categorically rejected these claims as frivolous and baseless, stating that no forensic evidence or documentation was provided to substantiate the accusations. Islamabad characterized a social media video of the captured fighters as a staged recording and accused the Afghan Taliban of using fabricated claims to deflect from internal dissent and the oppression of minorities.

The tension follows a series of military actions. The Pakistani military reported killing over 71 militants in Balochistan province and conducted airstrikes on 10 locations in eastern Afghanistan to target drone operations. While Pakistan claims these strikes targeted militants, the United Nations and Afghan officials reported three civilian deaths. Additionally, Pakistan issued a formal demarche to the Afghan Taliban on September 26 following a drone violation of Pakistani airspace on September 23, demanding that Kabul prevent Afghan soil from being used for terrorist attacks against Pakistan.
