U.S. Strikes Iranian Ports and Bridges as Conflict Escalates

The United States destroyed a surveillance tower at Chabahar port and hit multiple bridges in Iran, prompting retaliatory strikes and significant civilian casualties.

The United States launched a series of airstrikes against Iranian infrastructure on July 17, 2026, targeting the Shahid Kalantari Port in Chabahar and transport links in Hormozgan Province. U.S. Central Command confirmed the destruction of a maritime surveillance tower at the port, stating the facility was used by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to track commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth released photographic evidence of the tower's collapse, which the U.S. claims degrades the ability of the IRGC to coordinate attacks on civilian crews.

Parallel strikes hit two bridges in Bandar Khamir, including the Kahourstan bridge, expanding U.S. targets to include civilian transport infrastructure. The Iranian Health Ministry reports that U.S. operations across five provinces—including Hormozgan, Bushehr, and Khuzestan—resulted in at least 38 deaths and over 400 injuries. Reports indicate strikes in Khuzestan allegedly forced the evacuation of a cancer hospital.

In response, Iran announced retaliatory strikes against U.S. military assets in Bahrain, Kuwait, Syria, and Oman. While the IRGC claimed to have attacked a U.S. command center at al-Tanf in Syria, the U.S. denied that any soldiers were captured or killed there. The Pentagon reported that 13 additional service members were injured this week, bringing the total U.S. casualty count to 14 dead and 427 wounded.
