Royal Mail Launches New QR Code Delivery Cards
Royal Mail is rolling out updated delivery notification cards featuring QR codes to help customers track parcels after a 100,000-card pilot program.
Royal Mail is introducing updated "something for you" delivery notification cards that utilize QR codes and unique nine-digit numbers. These digital tools allow customers to access a tracking page or app to locate parcels and view photos of items left in safe locations. The national rollout follows a pilot program in which 100,000 cards were used without issue.
While the company maintains the system simplifies deliveries for both customers and postal workers, the move has drawn criticism. Some members of the public argue the digital focus excludes individuals without smartphones or internet access. Other concerns center on security, specifically the potential for counterfeit cards featuring malicious QR codes.
To support non-digital users, the company stated the cards include an automated telephone number. Additionally, the service integrates Relay UK to assist deaf and speech-impaired individuals. Royal Mail has emphasized that it has processes to manage suspected fraud and noted that the company will never request additional payment or information simply to track an item.
